What it does

Should I Buy It? turns a purchase price into two more useful measurements: the work time required to earn it and its share of one estimated week of take-home pay.

Why it exists

Prices are easy to underestimate when checkout takes only a few taps. This tool adds a pause and puts the number into everyday context before you decide.

The aim is not to make every purchase feel guilty or to reduce a decision to one score. It is to reveal information that a price tag leaves out. Ten hours of take-home work often communicates more than $180 by itself.

How results are produced

The calculator divides the price by after-tax hourly pay to estimate work time. It also compares the price with hourly pay multiplied by weekly work hours. The resulting percentage selects one of three waiting prompts using fixed, published thresholds.

What it does not do

The verdict is a simple rule based only on the values entered. It does not know your bills, savings, debt, goals, or personal circumstances and is not financial advice.

It also does not rate products, predict durability, calculate cost per use, or include interest and recurring expenses unless you add them to the price. A necessary purchase can be reasonable even when its paycheck share is high.

Editorial approach

Should I Buy It? does not rank retailers, recommend specific products, or earn an affiliate commission from a purchase. Any advertising is separate from the calculator and does not affect a result. Explanatory content is written to clarify the math and its limits rather than steer visitors toward a transaction.

How the site was made

This is a small, AI-assisted web project. The concept, formulas, verdict rules, examples, design choices, and published copy are reviewed as part of the site-building process. The calculator is intentionally dependency-free so its behavior is easy to inspect and it works without an account.
